Objective method of complete removal of hazardous emissions with crankcase blow-by gases of reciprocating internal combustion engines

EDN: BFTDYY

Abstract

Introduction (problem statement and relevance). Extending the functionality period of the cylinder-piston group while increasing the maintenance intervals and reducing emissions of particulate matters (PM) of less than 5–10 μm with crankcase blow-by gases containing cancerogenic compounds especially dangerous to health in the form of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) causing oncological diseases among urban population according to the World Health Organization (WHO) conclusion is still an important task of internal combustion engines (ICE) performance improvement.

The purpose of the study is to research the impact of the PAH value in the crankcase blow-by gases on the engine oil aging determining the functionality period of oils and parts of the ICE cylinder-piston group.

Methodology and research methods. Measurement of PAH content within the engine oils operated for an extended period in case of significant increase in the maintenance intervals.

Scientific novelty and results. As a result of the conducted special studies of the engine oils operated for long runs in four KamAZ vehicles and exposed to crankcase blow-by gases, a significant increase in the PAH amount, dangerous to health and facilitating the oil aging, in the engine oils was recorded.

Practical significance. Based on the obtained research results, a method is suggested, which includes obligatory disposal of condensed engine oil vapors into a separate vessel after crankcase blow-by gases treatment in the separator rather than return of these vapors back to the ICE oil tank.
