Principle of functional domain expansion of highly automated vehicles

EDN: XYHVOG

Abstract

Introduction (problem statement and relevance). For highly automated vehicles, the possibilities of driving on public roads are limited, for example, by legislative acts such as resolutions of the Government of the Russian Federation “On establishment of the experimental legal regime in the digital innovation area and approval of the Program of the experimental legal regime in the digital innovation area on operation of highly automated motor vehicles”. The territorial restrictions are connected not only with legal framework but also with technical difficulties involving, inter alia, high labour inputs required to create such maps, maintain their relevance in terms of big cities, regions, the country, and also in the large amount of memory they occupy.

The purpose of the study is to form a method of organization of a highly automated vehicles control system (with high level of automation applying high-precision digital maps) to enable such vehicles to be (continuously) driven on roads with and without high-precision maps.

Methodology and research methods. The paper presents an analytical study of distinctions between the electronic advanced driver assistance systems and highly automated vehicle control systems in terms of their application on the roads for various purposes, prospects for their further development, and also proposes an approach to implementation of control systems applicable on a wide range of road sections.

Scientific novelty and results. A method of organization of a highly automated vehicle control system has been formed, which allows continuous driving of such vehicles not only on the road sections for which high-precision digital maps are built but also on the ones which have no such maps, by switching control modes, taking into account the necessity to implement the possibility of transition to the minimum risk condition. Thus, there is automatic switching of the automated vehicle from one operational design domain to another.

Practical significance. The results of the study can be applied for development of automatic control systems for highly automated vehicles, including driverless vehicles.
