Once again about the problems of hydrogen on-board storage. Part 1
EDN: UDAQLW
Abstract
Introduction (problem statement and relevance). Hydrogen as an energy carrier was proposed more than 200 years ago, but to date, there have been ongoing disputes about the feasibility of its application in motor vehicles. Discussions on this issue are contradictory, ranging from enthusiastic assessments of the “hydrogen” transition to quite critical assessments of its advantages. In this regard, it seems appropriate to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of the use of hydrogen in one of the most intensive areas of energy consumption, i.e. in automobile transport. The use of energy carriers in this capacity has a number of features, including mobility, specified lifetime and non-stationary nature of consumption. Based on these conditions, the requirements for the systems of filling, storage, transportation and consumption of any on-board energy carrier, including hydrogen, are formed. Quite a lot of attention has been paid to this issue, but considering the high dynamics of hydrogen technologies development, it is necessary, if possible, to promptly monitor these changes and timely assess the consequences of their implementation, including those in automobile transport.
The purpose of the study is to present and evaluate the current state of development of hydrogen storage and transportation systems, taking into account the specifics of automobile transport operation.
Scientific novelty and results. Critical assessment of present-day technologies of hydrogen storage and transportation, with the conclusion that it is inexpedient and untimely to switch to hydrogen power systems of present-day vehicles.
Methodology and research methods. Analysis of literature sources and references in terms of hydrogen and its storage systems from the perspective of feasibility of consumption by motor transport.
Practical significance. Recommendations to reduce efforts into the applied use of hydrogen in transport.
